California virus hospitalization may surge next month
California began seeing early, but is concerned about rising coronavirus data after the decline
California Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Mark Girly said the increase would include per capita cases, COVID-19 hospital emergency visits, and new admissions for confirmed or suspected cases.
According to Girly, this trend seems to be due to the gatherings and activities of workers before and after holidays. Other factors could include recent business resumptions and large wildfires that have forced millions of people to evacuate or change their daily operations due to unhealthy air.
According to Girly, a nasty short-term forecast is that COVID-19-related hospitalizations will increase by 89% from the current 2,578 (the lowest since early April) to just under 5,000. An additional concern is the upcoming flu season.
Girly pointed out that the state is heading for another hot weekend, with more people gathering with others and potentially more chances of getting a virus.
“I think our important message today continues to help reduce risk. It’s a safer and lower transmission environment across our state.”
Girly called on people to wear facial covers, keep physical distances, avoid mixing with others, get flu shots, and “make the right decisions.”
“All of these tools in our toolkit need to be used and advanced this weekend, so we can actually bring these uptrends back and even lower them.”
Girly also said California would carry out its own independent review of the potential COVID-19 vaccine, demonstrating distrust of the Trump administration’s accelerated initiatives. He said the state government would form a review committee of leading scientists to assess the safety and efficacy of vaccine candidates.
“I think it’s a good approach to take, especially because things are moving so fast,” he said. “We want to make sure we do it with the maximum safety of Californians in mind, despite the urge and interest in making a useful vaccine.”
Earlier this week, more of California was allowed to resume additional operations, including most of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Some restrictions lifted in counties that have shown improvement occur when California attempts a second attempt to recover from the catastrophic impact of COVID-19 on business. From late spring to early summer, the number of cases and hospitalizations surged, and early efforts to resume more quickly.
According to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, California had the most confirmed cases in 801,000, with the fourth highest death toll being 15,461. The state-wide infection rate last week was 2.8%, the lowest since the pandemic began, but has begun to rise again in parts of the state.
