A new study published in the journal PLOS ONE suggests that petrolatum and talcum powder are the best lubricants to use to protect the skin from wear on personal protective equipment (PPE).

According to researchers, petroleum jelly and talcum powder can prevent injuries caused by prolonged use of masks and visors during a coronavirus pandemic.
The authors stated that the best lubricants are those that are not absorbed by the skin. Therefore, it creates a long-term layer of protection between the skin and PPE.
Scientists, including researchers at Imperial College London in the United Kingdom, have pointed out that more workers are using PPE to protect themselves from the virus.
However, prolonged use of PPE, especially around the face, can cause friction and can cause skin lacerations, blisters, ulcers, hives and other injuries.

Researchers said workers may need to apply lubricant every 30 minutes to protect the skin. This is not possible because you may be exposed to viruses.

The authors of the study explained that talcum powder reduces friction by 49% when applied and 59% in 4 hours. However, over-the-counter products containing coconut oil, cocoa butter, and beeswax reduced friction by 31% when applied and 53% in 4 hours.
Researchers also write that the mixture of petrolatum and lanolin reduced friction by 30% throughout the test.
