The state of Maine recorded two more coronavirus deaths and 42 newly confirmed cases on Sunday as the number of infections increased to 253-an increase of over 80 over the weekend.
Women in their 80s and men in their 60s from Cumberland County are the second and third people in a state to die from COVID-19, a disease caused by a coronavirus, Main Disease Control Center.
The man worked for the Maine Department of Transportation for a long time, the agency said in a Sunday afternoon news release. Women have not been identified.
“The entire MaineDOT family mourns this tragic loss,” said DOT Commissioner Bruce Van Note in a statement. “Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are addressed to our colleagues’ families and friends. We are forever grateful for his service to Maine.”
According to authorities, DOT employees have recently gone on vacation, the agency has not disclosed anywhere and has not returned to work since then, so the risk of transmission to colleagues is low.
“I thank him for his many years of service to the United States. On behalf of the Maine people, I sincerely congratulate his family, friends, loved ones, and loyal employees of the Maine Department of Transportation. Governor Janet Mills said in a statement: “Know we share your sorrow and support you.”
Maine reported the first coronavirus death on Friday – a Cumberland County man in his 1980s. As of Sunday, 41 had recovered.
At midnight on Sunday, the virus was particularly dangerous for the elderly and those with compromised immune systems, reaching 12 out of 16 Maine counties.
Cumberland County is still the leader in cases, followed by 142, followed by York County with 47.
However, public health officials have warned all minners to take precautionary measures, even if they have not yet been formally diagnosed in the county.

As the coronavirus spreads throughout the state, CDC in Maine is trying to get the medicines and equipment needed to treat patients and keep healthcare workers safe.
Dr. Nirv Shah, director of CDC in Maine, recently arrived with a shipment of test chemicals last week (although enough for 3,000 patients) and will need more.
Maine has a total of 164 intensive care units throughout the state, with 90 beds available on Sunday, a Maine CDC spokeswoman said. There were 311 ventilators in the state, 242 were needed, in extreme cases where patients could not breathe on their own.
Shah warns that the spike in cases over a day is not long-term for epidemiologists to draw conclusions about trends in outbreaks. Still, he said in a Twitter post that the 43 increase on Saturday was “concerned.”

Except for activities such as grocery shopping and exercise, Maine has taken emergency measures, closed schools and “unnecessary” businesses, and encouraged residents to stay indoors.
Amid rising concerns about possible virus transmission from out-of-state visitors, the state of Maine posted a message on an electronic signboard along the turnpike in the state of Maine, allowing individuals from high-infection areas (such as New York) to be more self-responsible. We plan to guide you to quarantine for at least 14 days.
It is not clear how the state authorities will enforce this order, but some Maine residents have been trying to control the movement of those who believe they are at risk of transmitting the virus by themselves. It is reported that he has accepted it. The Knox County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday, Armed Vinal Haven Residents Trees were cut down to block the driveway of those who believed they should be quarantined.
Grocery store employees, like healthcare professionals, have tolerated above-average risks by working at the forefront of coronavirus outbreaks.
Spokesperson Eric Brom learned on Sunday that the Hannaford Brothers supermarket chain had a positive response to COVID-19 on Saturday at Oxford and Scarborough employees. He said neither employee had been working at the store for several days, but Hannaford still did “thorough and thorough cleaning” at each store. Both places are open.
“This thorough cleaning is in addition to our ongoing strict hygiene practices, and these practices have been greatly expanded during the health crisis,” Brom said in an email.
Shaw’s Supermarkets said Saturday night employees at the Congress Street store in Portland were positive. Employees were last shifted on March 23, but the chain did not provide details about the person’s role in the store.
