United States far from herd immunity, less than 10% of adults showing viral antibodies nationwide
About 90% of adults in the United States are at risk of being infected with COVID-19, according to a new study from Stanford University.
The study was published Friday in the medical journal The Lancet.
Using data from dialysis centers across the country, researchers found that by the end of July, less than 10% of adults had antibodies to COVID-19.
Herd immunity occurs when a significant portion of the population is immune to infectious diseases.
According to CDC director Dr. Robert Redfield, these numbers are consistent with future studies by the Centers of Disease Control, which will be published “next week or so.”
“Preliminary results from the first round show that the majority of more than 90% of the population is still vulnerable,” Redfield told lawmakers at a Senate hearing this week.
