Coronavirus at school: Ottawa school could be closed due to lack of staff
Ottawa-Ottawa’s largest school board is addressing staff shortages and telling parents to prepare.
At the end of Friday, the Ottawa Carlton District Board of Education (OCDSB) sent parents a letter outlining how the Board manages the COVID-19 case. One item that stood out for some parents was a highlighted section stating that they needed to “prepare for the possibility of school closures” if the board did not have enough staff.

Two weeks have passed since the children returned to their Ontario classrooms, and anxiety continues between parents and students. Throughout the state, the total number of COVID-19 cases continues to grow, with at least 238 positive results. Nearly 200 schools have reported the virus infection to at least one student or employee.

The University of Teachers of Ontario warns that there is a shortage of state-wide accredited faculty due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In a letter sent to former and retired teachers, the university urged people to return to work to regain membership and provide peace of mind in the classroom.
Becky Arb, a four-year-old parent, understands the difficulties in dealing with COVID-19, but wants the school to remain open. She relies on them for support and believes that the best place for her children is in the classroom.
“I know there are online options, but I just read that they were even short teachers and they would have to shut down some of them,” Arb said. “I have four children. Three go to school. My oldest is autism. Being in a school environment is the best overall pandemic.”
Trustee Fisher acknowledges that parents can be in difficult situations if schools begin to close, but the board works hard to ensure that they remain open. I am.
“As parents and trustees, we want to ensure the continuity of learning, so I think we have to be really creative about how to staff in some of these positions,” Fisher said. “If you want to keep your school open, you need the talent to do it. You have to think outside the box.”
