Coronavirus outbreaks at Foothills Medical Center affect three units and raise concerns for medical staff
Calgary-In an outbreak of COVID-19 at the Foothills Medical Center in Calgary, at least 136 staff have been quarantined after 18 medical staff and 20 patients tested positive for the disease.
Four people have died since the first outbreak was first discovered earlier this month. Three units are under surveillance, including cardiac unit 82 and general medical units 36 and 62.
“I don’t say staff are always on the edge, but I think people are clearly more vigilant,” said Dr. Rachel Grimink and the hospital’s Medical Staff Association.
“I’m worried about getting an infectious disease (on my own) and taking it back to my family,” he said.
Dr. Dina Hinshaw, Alberta’s Chief Health Officer, says he is investigating the cause of the outbreak in the state.
“We don’t want to be in a place where we need to consider limiting visits again,” Grimink said.
If the unit has an outbreak watch, health authorities will monitor the area to see if there is a possibility of COVID-19.
Alberta Health Services is expected to provide updates on Sunday in relation to the outbreak.
