Heart disease in adolescents may be associated with exposure to diabetes in utero
Young adults and teenage heart disease may be associated with exposure to diabetes in utero, according to a new study published in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal)..
A study of young and teenagers living in Manitoba, Canada, found that mothers with diabetes during pregnancy were at 50 risk of developing heart disease by age 35 than children who were not exposed in utero. ~ 200% higher.
“These observations support our hypothesis that prevalence of cardiovascular disease in adolescence and early adulthood is associated with exposure to maternal diabetes in utero,” co-author.
Researchers examined data on more than 290,000 children born to approximately 190,000 mothers in Manitoba between 1979 and 2005. Of all children, 2.8% were exposed to gestational diabetes and 1.1% were exposed to existing type 2 diabetes. During the study, exposure to both types of diabetes became more common, and this trend was seen elsewhere in the world.
The three most common diagnoses of offspring exposed to diabetes were hypertension (8713), type 2 diabetes (3568), and ischemic heart disease (715).
“Using data from almost all children born in Manitoba over the last 30 years, children born to pregnant diabetic mothers are 30% to 80% more likely to develop heart disease. We have found that they are 2.0 to 3.4 times more likely to have heart disease risk factors (eg, high blood pressure, diabetes) than children born to pregnant mothers without diabetes, “says Dr. McGavoc.
In addition, the heart condition and risk factors of children exposed to diabetes in the womb were diagnosed two years ago.
Previous studies have recorded an increased risk of type 2 diabetes due to exposure to diabetes in utero, but it is not a cardiovascular disease.
The authors suggest that these findings may help preventive health care.
“Screening children with intrauterine exposure to diabetes for risk factors for cardiovascular disease may help assess the future burden associated with cardiovascular disease in the population,” the authors said. Concludes.
