A healthy heart is more important than ever in a coronavirus pandemic

Dubai: World Heart Day, observed annually on September 29, was created to inform people that cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death on Earth.

This year, coronavirus disease (COVID-19) claims to have killed more than 91,224 people worldwide so far, and the message that people should be responsible for heart health is this. It has a bigger meaning than that.

According to the World Heart Federation, which launched World Heart Day in 2000, CVD, including heart disease and stroke, is the number one murderer in the world, killing more than 17.9 million people each year.

Of these deaths, 80% are caused by coronary heart disease (heart attack) and cerebrovascular disease (stroke), affecting people primarily in low- and middle-income countries. These diseases also account for nearly half of all deaths from non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Neglecting heart health is a source of heightened concern throughout the Arab region.

Poor diet and environmental conditions in a rapidly growing urban environment mean that even children in the Arab Gulf region are at higher risk of developing CVD than children in other Arab countries.

Take Saudi Arabia as an example. According to Dr. Mohammed Bargis, an associate professor at King Saudbin Abdulaziz Health Science University and an intervention cardiologist at the National Guard Hospital, about 5-6% of the population suffers from CVD, with diabetes and high blood pressure being the most common. Is considered a risk factor. ..

“Many people lead a sedentary life, which means smoking, obesity and hyperlipidemia (high levels of cholesterol) are the main causes of people at high cardiovascular risk,” Bargis told Arab News. Told.

The World Health Organization estimates that 54% of NCD deaths in the East Mediterranean region are due to CVD. It ascribes the prevalence of such diseases to diabetes, hypertension, and a surprising increase in obesity, especially in GCC among children.

These numbers are even more worrisome given the potential long-term and short-term effects of COVID-19 on the heart, brain and lungs.

Many claims about the disease still lack conclusive evidence, but studies conclude that people with CVD are more vulnerable to developing the severe form of COVID-19. I will.

“One of the unintended consequences of COVID-19 is to delay people suffering from heart attacks and strokes seeking medical assistance in Saudi Arabia,” Bargis said.

Dr. Mohammed Barghis

“In the current pandemic, we have noticed a decline in the number of CVD patients as a result of the blockade and because so many patients are afraid to visit hospitals during this time. This is very alarming, as can have even worse consequences. “

Bargis said heart death is primarily preventable if a person experiencing a heart attack is taken to the hospital in time for treatment.

“It’s really disappointing to see this … especially because the risk of death from an untreated heart attack is 10 times higher than with COVID-19,” he added.

He says this trend leads to “unnecessary loss of life” and goes to local hospitals where heart disease patients in Saudi Arabia have a minimal risk of COVID-19 infection in heart attack and stroke patients. I urged you.

Air pollution and smoking continue to be key predictors of the increase in early cardiovascular disease worldwide. (AFP)

However, despite increasing efforts to raise awareness about the nature of heart disease during a pandemic, many are skipping voluntary hospital visits.

Indeed, research into the effects of COVID-19 on the heart is still underway.

“Although the data are still in their infancy, studies show that three-quarters of people infected with COVID-19 still have changes in cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, even with minimal symptoms. “It has been done,” said Dr. Stephen Kopekki, a cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic. I told Arab News.

The long-term effects of COVID-19 remain “unknown,” but the virus causes myocarditis (damage to the muscle tissue of the heart), pericarditis, decreased left ventricular contractile function, and arrhythmias identified as heart disease. He said it could appear in the heart if done. Secondary effect.

“The main effect of COVID-19 is in the lungs, but hypoxia (lack of oxygen) can stress the heart and cause type 2 myocardial infarction,” he said.

The good news is that COVID-19 is not guaranteed to cause heart disease in all recovering patients.

In fact, heart health is primarily lifestyle-dependent, except in certain cases where patients are susceptible to heart problems caused by common risk factors or genetics.

“Lifestyle, lifestyle, lifestyle,” said Kopekki, emphasizing the importance of diet and exercise in a healthy life.

“The first cause of heart disease is diet. Ingestion of processed foods has increased over the last two decades,” he said, noting especially processed fats and carbohydrates.

The second major cause of cardiovascular disease is lack of physical activity, many jobs outside the home tend to be sedentary, have longer screening times, and are likely to have little or no active activity. He said.

Dr. Stephen Kopekki

In addition, air pollution and smoking remain major predictors of the increase in early cardiovascular disease worldwide, despite a slight reduction in cigarette usage reported in developed economies.

“Eating and physical activity, avoiding smoking, and maintaining a normal weight are the keys to maintaining a healthy heart. Relieving stress, getting enough sleep, and limited alcohol consumption are also very helpful,” Kopekki said. Said.

His advice on World Heart Day was initiated to encourage individuals, families, communities and governments to participate in activities that help manage heart health and raise awareness, and is broader than #UseHeart. It is consistent with the global campaign.

The campaign also supports the 2012 World Leaders’ Pledge to Reduce NCD Global Mortality by 25% by 2025.

Non-communicable diseases that lead to cardiovascular disease include obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia.

The message of the campaign is especially important in developing countries where CVD is becoming more prevalent.

According to Kopecky, heart attacks often afflict people working in the workforce, primarily those under the age of 65.

“In economically developed countries such as the United States, the prevalence of cardiovascular disease remains about the same. However, in the last five years, the incidence of cardiovascular events has actually increased somewhat and lifespan has previously occurred. It has decreased compared to the one, “he said, referring to the decrease in CVD events over the last 50 years.

In addition, according to Kopecky, CVD generally appears 10 years earlier in men than in women, often affecting men in their late 50s and early 60s, and women in their late 60s and early 70s. ..

Still, at least 80% of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke can be avoided, regardless of gender, age, or environment.

With all that in mind, healthcare professionals argue that it’s up to individuals to choose the right lifestyle when it comes to what they eat, how often they exercise, and whether they smoke.
