Another Chinese virus? ICMR warns about “Cat Que Virus” which can spread the disease in India
Despite the world’s still working on the COVID-19 pandemic, scientists at the Indian Medical Research Council (ICMR) have discovered another virus, the Cat Que Virus, which has been reported primarily in China.
According to a report released by ICMR, the virus has the potential to spread the disease throughout India.
CQV, one of the arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses), can cause febrile illness, meningitis, and childhood encephalitis in humans.
Has Cat Que Virus been reported in India?
Researchers at Pune at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) have found antibodies to the virus in two of 883 human serum samples taken from various states in India. This indicates that at some point people were infected with the virus.
Two samples tested positive for CQV antibodies came from Karnataka in 2014 and 2017.
During the course of the study, the virus was not found in human or animal samples.
The results of this study were published in the latest issue of the Indian Journal of Medical Research (IJMR).
According to ICMR studies, Indian mosquitoes are susceptible to CQV, which can also be a public health pathogen.
Its natural host is a mosquito. Domestic pigs are the major mammalian host for CQV, and anti-CQV IgM and IgG antibodies have been reported in locally-reared pigs in China.
Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) have become a serious public health concern due to the emergence and re-emergence of arbovirus diseases around the world.
The presence of CQV in Chinese Akai Eka and Vietnamese pigs suggests that Asian countries are sensitive to CQV.
