Two different virus amplification tests were performed on most samples. The widely available PCR test and the less common, but faster and more portable RT-LAMP test.
The numbers of positive and negative results for all samples were very similar, with nasopharyngeal swabs and saliva samples detecting infected individuals in 77-93% and 83-97% of subjects, respectively.
Both tests were also able to identify more than 99.9% of subjects without infection, the researchers said.
They said that the levels of virus detected in the nasopharyngeal swab and saliva were comparable and highly correlated.
“PCR sensitivity is much higher than previously thought of 70% from initial data from symptomatic patients,” Teshima said.
