Nantucket reports 19 new COVID-19 cases.A cluster leading to churches gathering on the island
Weekend Nantucket officials reported 19 new COVID-19 cases on the island, including a cluster of churches, with a positive test rate of 4.3% on Sunday for seven days.
Town provided details statement Posted on the official website on Sunday.
Since Friday, the island’s only hospital, Nantucket Cottage Hospital, has reported 19 new cases among those tested on the facility’s drive-through assessment site, according to a statement. According to the statement, contact tracing is underway.
“Among these new incidents are clusters related to churches gathering on the island,” the statement said. “This incident should serve as a reminder to the community to avoid large gatherings, and you should always wear a mask in public when physical distance is not possible.”
The statement added that town officials are urging companies and organizations to review the COVID-19 safety protocol with their employees to ensure physical distance in areas where staff and the general public gather.
According to the statement, symptomatic employees should be allowed to stay home from work and should be referred to the hospital for evaluation.
“Nantucket remains classified by Massachusetts as a high-risk (red) community of COVID-19 infections based on the average daily number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants,” the statement said. “To control this current surge in new cases of COVID-19, the entire island needs to work together to control the cases. Please be vigilant to everyone in the community.”
As of September 23, Nantucket had an average of 26.5 positive cases per 100,000 people in the last two weeks, according to a weekly community summary from the State Public Health Service. In more than 8 cases per 100,000 cases, the municipality is classified in the red high risk category.
