Berlin patient: Timothy Ray Brown dies, the first person to be cured of HIV

Timothy Ray Brown, the first person to be cured of HIV, died of cancer.
Also known as a “patient in Berlin,” Brown received a bone marrow transplant from a donor who is naturally resistant to HIV.
That meant he no longer needed antivirals, and for the rest of his life he remained free of viruses that could lead to AIDS.
The International AIDS Society said Mr Brown gave the world hope that HIV could be treated.
Born in the United States, Brown, 54, was diagnosed with HIV when he lived in Berlin in 1995. Then, in 2007, he developed a type of blood cancer called acute myeloid leukemia.
His treatment included destroying the bone marrow that was producing cancer cells and performing a bone marrow transplant.
The transfer came from a donor who had a rare mutation in a piece of DNA called the CCR5 gene.
HIV resistance
CCR5 is a set of genetic instructions that build a gateway through which the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can infect cells.
Mutations to CCR5 essentially lock the door and give people resistance to HIV.
After treatment, Mr Brown’s blood levels of HIV dropped to undetectable levels, and he no longer needed antiretroviral therapy. He was effectively “healing”.
However, the leukemia that led to his HIV treatment recurred earlier this year and spread to his brain and spinal cord.
“It’s very sad to announce that Timothy has died after five months of fighting leukemia … I’m surrounded by my friends,” said his partner Tim Hefgen. Post to Facebook..
“Tim devoted his life’s work to talking about his HIV treatment and became an ambassador of hope,” he added.
Is it close to a cure?
Mr Brown’s treatment was risky and aggressive and could not be used on a daily basis. This remains primarily cancer treatment. This approach is also too expensive for many 38 million people in sub-Saharan Africa who are believed to be living with HIV infection.
But Mr Brown’s story suggests that scientists, patients, and the world may eventually find a cure.
The International AIDS Society (IAS) said it was in mourning with a “very heavy heart.”
“We would like to thank Timothy and his doctor, Gero Hatter, for opening the door for scientists to explore the notion that HIV can be treated,” said IAS President. Professor Adiva Kamalluzaman said.

The second person who has been cured of HIV was announced earlier this year. Known as a London patient, Adam Castigejo was treated similar to Mr Brown and was able to quit his HIV drug.
“The Timothy and Adam cases are not a viable large-scale strategy for treatment, but they represent an important moment in finding a cure for HIV,” said the director of the Doherty Institute in Melbourne, Australia. One Professor Sharon Lewin said. ..
