EU wary of new outbreaks
This warning follows the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) between wild birds and poultry in western Russia and Kazakhstan in recent months. This area is known as the autumn route for wild waterfowl to Europe.
Northern and Eastern Europe may be the most vulnerable to new outbreaks, given past experience. The spread of the virus can be caused by a sudden and persistent drop in temperatures in Central Russia and Kazakhstan. Several studies have shown that cold weather conditions led to the rapid westward spread of the HPAI virus by migratory birds infected during the 2005-2006 and 2016-2017 waves.
