Former Boston Councilor Tito Jackson Talks About Coronavirus Contract
Coronavirus cases increased exponentially in Boston, reaching a total of 825 on Monday. This is nearly 30 times the number of cases two weeks before the city first declared a public health emergency.
Former city council member and former candidate for Tito Jackson may be one of hundreds of people who tested positive for the virus. He told Jim Broad Great Boston at WGBH News Monday He is currently “recovering,” but “obviously scared” when he first manifested his symptoms.
“I … first coughed badly, then had a fever and a headache the next day, then on the third day, really terrible muscle pounding, aching pain, and worse from there,” he said. “I was the most scared of the people I’ve contacted.”
“I closed myself on the second day and have been isolated since then,” he added.
Jackson also responded to rumors that he said that people were spreading online less likely to get the virus.
“There was a rumor that the black people did not know [coronavirus.] That’s absolutely wrong, “he added, adding that the high rates of certain respiratory diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, could actually put the color community at greater risk.
“This condition definitely affects blacks, Latin Americans, Asians and whites,” he said. “It hit us, and it hit us very hard.”
Jackson said the coronavirus could strike people of all ages.
“I have a friend who is 10 years younger and actually went to the hospital. I was able to get over this at home,” he said. “I don’t know if you will be hospitalized. That’s why social distance is so important.”
Currently the owner and C.E.O. Jackson Recreation and Medical Marijuana Company Verdant Medical also considered the economic impact of the crisis on his industry.
“This has a terrible effect,” he said. “Can you imagine the meaning of the first year completely closed?”
Unlike liquor stores, recreational marijuana companies are classified as non-essential and subject to statewide closures aimed at preventing the spread of coronavirus. Jackson called on state authorities to reconsider.
“The recreation store needs to be able to open,” he said. “They should be treated like a shop selling liquor.”
