VBCF aims to turn awareness into action during Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Harrisonburg, Virginia (WHSV)-October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and according to the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation, awareness is very important, but its goal is to put it into action. So we have put together a webinar to educate people about this disease. A webinar will be held every Thursday this month.

“We’re going to do a series of four topics,” said Katy Sawyer, VBCF Secretary-General. “That is, one is medical cannabis, one is nutrition and breast cancer, the other is sexuality and breast cancer, and the last is the latest information on the treatment of metastatic breast cancer and patient resources.”

Sawyer says it’s important for both men and women to know your body and be an advocate of your own health when it comes to breast cancer. Learn about your family history and if your family does not develop breast cancer, do not rule it out.

“85% of women diagnosed have no family history of breast cancer,” Sawyer said.

Sawyer says that the greatest risk factor for breast cancer is being born as a woman and should never dismiss the annual mammogram. When doing a self-examination, try to see and feel the bones of the collar and under the arms between the mammograms.

If you or your loved one is diagnosed with breast cancer, VBCF suggests taking notes with someone when you go to the appointment. Sawyer says it’s very common to be overwhelmed when diagnosed and focus solely on the word “cancer.” Therefore, it is important to have a second ear at the time of booking to help you process all the information and take notes.
