“I was surprised they were using all the other medicines,” he said.
Antibody cocktails provide two target antibodies to SARS-CoV2 by using monoclonal antibodies that specifically target two regions of the viral spike protein. This is a way the virus attaches to and invades human cells.
Basquez, who leads the trial for AU inpatients and outpatients, said he didn’t know what the president’s symptoms were or what he was doing when he was given a cocktail, so he asked if the doctor made the right decision. He said it was difficult to judge. He said the benefits of this drug are that it only needs to be taken once and the patient should feel better after 3 days.
Vazquez said there were no side effects from currently enrolled patients, but there is not much data available because it is a random trial. Based on the data he saw, the burden of the virus was significantly reduced and the patient’s symptoms improved.
“Theoretically, if you do so, the severity should be reduced, and if the patient is hospitalized, the length of stay should be shortened,” he said.
Vazquez anticipates that antibodies will be generally available for the treatment of COVID-19 in the near future. He also hopes that the president will take it, which will increase interest in drugs and clinical trials.
Vazquez said it would take at least six months for clinical trials to provide sufficient data, with the inpatient part going on and the outpatient part going at a slower pace.
