Scientists say the coronavirus can block pain receptors in some people
Due to all its fatal effects, the new coronavirus may actually have one unexpected side effect.
It blocks pain and can hide in the body without the virus being detected early on.
new Investigation From scientists at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center Indicates that the new coronavirus has a second receptor involved in pain signaling. Coronavirus spikes attach to receptors, enter cells, and infect cells.
According to Rajesh Khanna, the principal investigator of the study, the virus appears to completely reduce or stop pain by attaching to this receptor, called the neuropyrin-1 receptor.
“The pain path is blocked,” Kanna said.
In a recent study, Kanna’s team tested the ability of the virus to relieve pain in more than 100 mice. They injected some mice with inactivated spikes of a novel coronavirus that could not cause infection but still attach to the neuropilin-1 receptor. Other mice received placebo.
According to Kanna, mice that received the coronavirus spikes relieved pain within 30 minutes, which lasted about 9 hours.
He theorizes that this mechanism allows the virus to fly under radar in the early stages of COVID-19 infection, before symptoms occur, and when people are most susceptible to infection.
“Maybe in the first stage, the first important stage, you can be resilient and relieve pain,” he said. “It’s tricking you into believing you’re fine.”
This is just a theory, not a coronavirus expert, Kanna said. Even if the virus blocks the sensation of pain, people can still get sick, Kanna said.
He has received dozens of anecdotal emails since his study was published by a patient who was in chronic pain before becoming ill.
“Then they got infected with COVID and now their pain is gone,” he said. “I fully admit that these are anecdotes … but it’s a repetitive theme. It’s daunting!”
He said that once the COVID-19 infection subsided in the patients, their chronic pain would recur.
These are anecdotal cases, but Khana believes that further study of this receptor may be important.
Receptors do not block all types of pain, but appear to be most associated with chronic inflammatory pain such as arthritis, low back pain, or pain as a result of chemotherapy.
He also theorized that the virus could attach to the neuropilin-1 receptor in asymptomatic COVID-19 patients more often than the main receptor. The main receptor for the virus is the ACE2 receptor, which is found in various organs such as the lungs, kidneys, heart and intestines.
As a UA professor of pharmacology specializing in the study of pain and pain treatments, Kanna is excited about the implications of this trans-pandemic study. His team had already studied the neuropilin-1 receptor for the past 18 months to assess potential pain management treatments.
“What the virus has done reveals that this receptor is a new player in pain signaling,” he said.
He plans to take advantage of this finding to further study the receptor and target this area for future pain management therapies or treatments.
