Massachusetts parents protest requiring students to be vaccinated against the flu
Hundreds of Massachusetts parents gathered outside a federal court in South Boston on Monday in support of a local man who sued Governor Charlie Baker, who ordered school children to be vaccinated against the flu.
Vincent Delaney, a resident of Peabody, told Herald that he had filed a proceeding against the governor “to speak to all these parents and to their voiceless children.”
The Baker administration introduced mandate in August, which applies to all children attending group settings from college schools and day care facilities.
“The requirements for the new vaccine are an important step in reducing the overall effects of influenza-related illnesses and respiratory illnesses during the COVID-19 pandemic,” the Public Health Service declared in a statement.
According to the agency, the symptoms of seasonal flu can be very similar to those of COVID-19, so the order aims to “protect medical resources.”
Students studying remotely are not exempt from ordering.
Many of the parents who participated in the protest expressed anger at the governor about the mandate.
“If I have children and they don’t want to be vaccinated, or if I’m a parent and I don’t want them to be vaccinated, why should they be forced to get vaccinated anyway? “Are you?” Said Rina Simone of North Reading, whose 15-year-old daughter attends public school.
Some parents, such as Anita Garcia, have gone as far as pulling their children out of school over orders. Garcia, whose children attended a school in New Bedford, said she is now homeschooling her 12- and 14-year-old daughters.
“As parents, we should be able to say what’s in our children’s bodies. Vaccine-like procedures should be done between clients and doctors, not between citizens and government.” She told Herald.
Most of the protesters who gathered outside the courts in the bustling Seaport district did not wear face coverings or comply with social distance guidelines, contrary to local public health regulations.
The group calls themselves “FluYou, Baker” and is backed by the entire federation. However, local polls show that the governor’s favor remains the highest in the country.
At Baker’s order, students must be vaccinated against the flu by December 31st.
