8 Jackson Nursing Home Resident COVID-19 Positive, Moved to Hospital | Coronavirus
The outbreak of COVID-19 at the St. John’s Health Living Center was widespread, with eight residents and two staff positive for the virus as of Monday.
The first case was identified about a week ago and immediate testing was initiated on all staff and residents. As the study program progressed, more cases were identified among the 37 residents.
Patients who tested positive were transferred to the hospital’s emergency department, said CEO Dr. Paul Bopre.
“All eight are medically stable,” he said on Monday afternoon.
There were nine COVID-19 patients in the hospital as the residents of the living center were transferred to the primary care unit. This is high compared to other points during the pandemic, but Bopre said the facility can accommodate more patients as needed.
Early in the pandemic, the hospital created the COVID-19 ward. The ward employs a negative pressure chamber to prevent viruses and other infections from escaping elsewhere in the hospital. Nine patients are using about half of their capacity, so St. John’s can afford it if needed, but the reinflux of COVID-19 patients will make life difficult for doctors and their teams. ..
“Then it’s a matter of staffing,” Bopre said.
COVID-19 patients require more nurses and doctors than regular inpatients, and patients who treat them use more personal protective equipment. Bopre said he was confident in the amount of equipment the hospital could buy and stockpile, but more patients would stretch his people thinly.
If the COVID-19 room is full, the intensive care unit is currently set up to accommodate 3 coronavirus patients and 3 other patients. If desired, all 6 beds can be dedicated to COVID-19 cases.
“But that means, in theory, there is no longer any ICU space for those who don’t have a COVID,” Beaupre said.
All of this new stress on hospital resources arises because 22 staff members have been in close contact with the infected or have been quarantined because they are COVID-19 positive.
“It will start giving us a pause, as it will be much more difficult to staff these patients who come to our hospital,” Bopre said.
To address the growing outbreak of St. John’s, the Wyoming Department of Health has relaxed guidance to nursing homes in the state. When the pandemic began, the Department of Health advised them to curb all visits.
Since then, state-wide restrictions have been relaxed and guidance has been changed to allow outdoor visits during the summer. Now, nursing homes also say they can start indoor visits.
“We hope that unfairly affected residents and families will receive some comfort,” Dr. Alexia Harristo of the State Department of Health said at a press conference on Monday.
Nursing homes did not have to follow that guidance, and St. Johns suspended all indoor and outdoor visits to the living center, at least until the outbreak subsided.
