Arizona Study: Coronavirus Infection Relieves Rodent Pain
Scientists at the University of Arizona say the virus that causes COVID-19 may have a surprising ability to relieve pain. Laboratory experiments with rodents have shown that when the virus binds to a gateway protein called neuropilin and enters the body, it blocks the first step in the pain-causing pathway. Simply put, how is it possible? Why can the illness actually relieve your pain?
It’s a confusing result. The illness itself is fooling you, or the virus is fooling you into thinking you are painless. This is advantageous for this virus as it allows it to spread more. So that relentless spread is what we were concerned about. I hypothesized that one of the reasons it was done was that the virus was giving you this pain-free, at least in presymptomatic or asymptotic conditions.
So this sounds a little nice. Perhaps the illness is less painful for some, but it can also be a problem. why?
This is a big problem because the virus is basically very sneaky in the early, pre- or asymptomatic stages. It tricks you into thinking you’re fine, which brings about a massive spread … In fact, it is estimated that 10 to 20 percent of people with COVID account for 60 to 80 percent of actual cases. Oh, absolutely … I’m flooded with lots of emails from all over the world giving me anecdotal evidence. Many of the people who write to me suffer from some form of chronic pain, such as an injury, a car accident, an illness, or something chemically induced. Surprisingly, they all have one story to tell: they have this pain for a long time, they are taking medications and opioids, intolerable pain, it’s horrifying. And what do you guess? They happened to be infected with COVID and suddenly their pain disappeared … Here there is a close relationship between pain and COVID and it is not completely resolved.
So what is the next step in this study?
Indeed, the virus has taught us two things. One is to really realize the potential for its great expanse by understanding some important things and some anomalies … The second thing the virus has taught us is that basically a new protein, nueropyrin 1, has been revealed. This has never been investigated in the context of pain. From the perspective of designing treatments for developing painful drugs, we have been given this new goal that we can now pursue.
At this stage, are there any plans to extend this beyond animal models to humans?
definitely. That is always the intention. However, you need to be a little careful in this case. In fact, you need to be very careful. How would you test the idea that it relieves pain?
