Antibiotics may be the best first treatment for appendicitis
Tuesday, October 6, 2020 (HealthDay News)-A large study in the United States suggests that antibiotics may do the trick for some patients suffering from appendicitis.
According to a new report, more than 70% of patients receiving antibiotics avoided surgery for at least 90 days.
“Comparing the results of people treated with antibiotics alone or surgery to remove the appendix, we found that people who received both treatments felt better in 30 days,” said co-principal investigator Dr. David Talan. Stated. “In terms of overall health, antibiotics are no worse than surgery, and most people were able to avoid surgery in a short period of time.”
Thalang is a professor of emergency medicine and infectious diseases at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine, David Gefen.
In this study, more than 1,500 patients in 14 states in the United States initially received random antibiotics or appendectomy. The study is the largest clinical randomized study to date for the treatment of appendicitis, the study authors said.
