Wisconsin health officials reported a record number of 141 new cases on Wednesday, days after the state saw new COVID-19 cases and death records. Governor Tony Evers announced on Wednesday that the state would open a field hospital in response to the surge in hospitalizations.
“We obviously wanted this day not to come, but unfortunately Wisconsin is in a much different and more dire place today, overwhelming our health care system.” Evers said.
Leaders in other states say they aren’t too late.
“Our hospitalization rates are skyrocketing and are beginning to strain our health care system, especially staffing,” Utah Lieutenant Governor Spencercox wrote on Twitter Wednesday. “Unfortunately, the number of deaths is increasing now. The Utah infection rate is not too late, so the Wisconsin announcement should be a cool memory.”
All other states, including Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Wyoming, have recorded record high hospitalizations in the last few days.
According to experts, the number of patients is increasing as the United States approaches winter at the daily COVID-19 baseline. For the first time since August, the country has an average of more than 44,000 new cases per day, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. This average will be useless when the country enters what the health authorities call a tough season.
