The number of people waiting for NHS treatment for more than a year reaches a maximum of 12 years
The number of people waiting for more than a year to start treatment in the hospital is the highest since 2008.
The continued impact of Covid-19 on delays in surgery and treatment is shown in the new NHS England data.
About 111,026 people have been waiting for more than 52 weeks before starting hospital treatment in August. This is the highest number in any month since September 2008.
The number for August 2019 was only 1,236.
The number of people waiting for more than 18 weeks to start treatment at the hospital also tripled in August compared to the same month last year.
Approximately 1.96 million people have waited for treatment in August for more than 18 weeks, about three times the number in August 2019 (662,043), the second highest total in the calendar month since the record began in August 2007.
It decreased slightly from 2.15 million in July 2020, the highest number since the record began.
According to the latest data, the number of people waiting for diagnostic tests for more than 6 weeks is 10 times higher than at the same time last year, which has improved since the beginning of the year.
A total of 472,088 patients were waiting for one of 15 standard tests, including MRI scans, non-obstetric ultrasonography, and gastroscopy.
The equivalent number who had been waiting for more than 6 weeks in August 2019 was 42,926.
The number of people waiting for more than 13 weeks in August 2020 was 239,920, compared to 5,284 in August 2019.
An NHS spokesman said: Covid level including scanning services that provide millions of urgent checks and tests.
“Continuing this progress is clearly essential for patients and is not endangered by a second wave of uncontrolled swirling Covid infections.”
The latest data also show that the total number of people admitted to routine treatment in UK hospitals decreased by 43% in August compared to a year ago.
Approximately 155,789 patients were hospitalized for treatment during the month, down from 275,267 in August 2019.
The year-on-year decrease recorded in July was 55% and the decrease in June was 67%.
The data further show that the UK GP made 169,660 emergency cancer referrals in August 2020. This is a 15% decrease from 200,317 cases in August 2019.
This is compared to a year-on-year decrease of 19% in July, 21% in June and 47% in May.
Referrals for emergency breast cancer decreased from 13,220 in August 2019 to 9,498 in August 2020, a 28% decrease.
Overall, the waiting list, which included waiters less than 18 weeks, was 4.22 million in August, less than in February (4.43 million) before the Covid-19 attack.
Experts suggest that this is due to delaying patients seeking help and the GP reducing referrals.
Meanwhile, emergency admissions to the A & E department of UK hospitals also declined last month, down 9% from 529,903 in September 2019 to 479,800 in September 2020.
Sara Bainbridge, Policy Director for Macmillan Cancer Support, said: “Discontinuation of cancer diagnosis and treatment has a traumatic impact on the lives of cancer patients.
“Today’s data show that six months after the start of the pandemic, there are still thousands fewer people undergoing cancer testing or treatment than at the same time last year. This is the patient’s backlog. Means that is increasing.
“I’m very worried about what this means.”
Siva Anandaciva, Chief Analyst at Kings Fund, said: “Covid-19 hospitalizations are increasing in parts of the country, thousands of people need long-term support for Covid symptoms, and more than 4 million have some treatments that are the first of the virus. I was late during the waves.
“More than 110,000 people have been waiting for more than a year and are bringing us back to a level that hasn’t been seen in 10 years.
“Combining these formidable challenges with the expected annual surge in demand for services and concerns about staff fatigue and overburden, it’s clear why so many NHS leaders are preparing for the harsh winter.”
John Appleby, Chief Economist at Nafield Trust, said:
Tim Gardner, Senior Policy Fellow, Health Foundation, said: “As winter approaches in Covid-19, the government should not underestimate the resources needed by the NHS.
“Without additional staff and facilities, we risk losing the summer progress made in the restoration of non-Covid services as emergency pressures surge.”
