Pipeline COVID-19 vaccine is unaffected by the “G strain” mutation

In a new study CSIRO’s dangerous pathogen team We conclude that the vaccine currently under development for COVID-19 should not be affected by recent mutations in the virus.

Most vaccines under development around the world were modeled on the original “D strain” of the virus and were more common in the sequences published early in the pandemic.

Since then, the virus has evolved into the world’s predominant “G strain” and now accounts for about 85 percent of the published SARS-CoV-2 genome.

There was concern that the G strain in the major proteins on the surface of the virus might adversely affect the vaccine under development. However, a study by the Federal Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIRO), Australia’s national scientific institution, found no evidence that this change adversely affected the effectiveness of vaccine candidates.

This study tested blood samples from ferrets given candidate vaccines against a strain of virus that had or did not have this mutation (known as “D614G”).

Professor Seshadri Vasan, Honorary Chairman of Health Sciences at the University of York, leads the Dangerous Pathogens team at CSIRO and is the senior author of this paper.

Professor Vasan said: “This is good news for hundreds of vaccines under development around the world. Most of them are spike proteins because they bind to the ACE2 receptors in the lungs and respiratory tract, which are the gateway to infect cells. I am targeting.
