Japan’s Fujifilm launches Avigan trial for coronavirus treatment
Tokyo (AFP) – Fujifilm, Japan, has launched a clinical trial to test the efficacy of the anti-influenza drug Avigan in treating patients with a new coronavirus, following reports of promising results in China.
Studies in China suggest that Avigan may play a role in reducing recovery time in patients infected with coronavirus.
“The trial will be conducted on 100 patients by the end of June,” a company spokeswoman told AFP Wednesday.
“Then we collect and analyze the data and file it for approval,” he added.
According to a spokesperson, the drug will be given to coronavirus patients aged 20 to 74 years with mild pneumonia for up to 14 days.
The study excluded pregnant women because of side effects shown in animal studies, he added.
The phase 3 trial will take place after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Saturday that the government will “start the process needed to officially approve (Avigan) as a treatment for a new coronavirus”.
China last month said it had completed clinical trials for Fabipiravir, a key component of Avigan.
Two domestic trials showed that the drug reduced the patient’s recovery time, but Fujifilm was not involved in these programs.
Avigan is currently approved for manufacture and sale in Japan as an influenza antiviral.
In a statement announcing the trial, Fujifilm said “it is anticipated that Avigan may have an antiviral effect on the new coronavirus.”
