West Nile Virus, Illinois: Chicago residents will be the first to die in 2020 in connection with a mosquito-borne disease, IDPH says
According to IDPH, 24 other human cases were reported in the state in 2020.
Chicago citizens became ill in mid-September and tested positive for the West Nile virus.
“We’re already in the fall, but the West Nile virus is at risk until the first heavy frost,” said Dr. Ngozi Ezike, director of IDPH. “It is important that everyone continues to take precautions, such as using insect repellents, wearing long-sleeved shirts and trousers, and staying indoors from dusk to dawn.”
Last year, IDPH reported 28 human cases, but human cases are underreported, including one death. In 2019, cases of West Nile virus-positive mosquito herds, birds, horses, or humans were reported in 46 counties in Illinois.

West Nile virus is transmitted by mosquito bites. Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headache, and muscle aches. Symptoms can last from days to weeks. However, 4 out of 5 people infected with the West Nile virus show no symptoms. In rare cases, serious illnesses, including meningitis, encephalitis, and even death, can occur. People over the age of 50 and those with immunodeficiency are at increased risk of serious illness.
