The recovery or randomized assessment of COVID-19 therapy is a series of clinical trials initiated in the United Kingdom to find effective treatments for people hospitalized (suspected or confirmed) with COVID-19. The clinical trial team included more than 3,500 healthcare professionals across the UK, including doctors, nurses, consultants, researchers, young doctors, and new graduates.
HCQ was the first drug the team began researching in May 2020. However, by June 5, the HCQ department of the study stopped taking more patients because the interim results showed drug inefficiency.
The story of hydroxychloroquine
Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine were one of the first drugs reported to be effective against the new coronavirus disease first reported in December 2019.
Although the disease was contagious, there was no cure available, so scientists around the world immediately began researching the drug and confirmed its effectiveness with various results. Some studies have shown that HCQ may be effective against new viruses, but others have argued that it is useless.
By 21 March, the Indian Medical Research Council (ICMR) has published guidelines for the prophylactic and therapeutic use of HCQ in COVID-19. Soon, studies began to show possible cardiovascular side effects of the drug. Observational studies conducted by ICMR have shown the same. However, the drug was well-publicized worldwide and was featured in both WHO in solidarity trials and the United Kingdom in recovery trials to find effective treatments for COVID-19 infection.
However, WHO canceled the solidarity trial in May and Lancet Studies have suggested that HCQ has potentially life-threatening effects, especially on cardiovascular health. The trial resumed immediately, but was completely discontinued in early July 2020 in light of existing evidence that the drug was ineffective.

Meanwhile, Indian guidelines are reported to continue to recommend taking HCQ for both prevention and treatment of COVID-19.
HCQ recovery test
In this study, UK researchers randomly assigned 1,561 COVID-19 patients to HCQ and received placebo in 3,155. The purpose of this study was to check patient mortality after 28 days.
The survey results are as follows.
- Twenty-seven percent of patients in the HCQ group died in 28 days, compared to 25% in the regular care group.
- Only 59.6% of patients in the HCQ group were discharged within 28 days, while 62.9% of the regular care group were discharged at the same time interval.
- Patients who did not require mechanical ventilation in the first place were more likely to require ventilation or die when using HCQ.
- The HCQ group had a slightly higher number of patients who died of heart problems, but these patients had no new cases of cardiac arrhythmias.
