Thousands of coronavirus-infected minks in Utah and Wisconsin
Utah and Wisconsin officials have announced that the coronavirus outbreak has killed thousands of minks. About 7,000 to 8,000 minks died on farms in Utah in less than two weeks. More than 2,000 mink deaths have been reported in Wisconsin.
Nine sites in Utah are under quarantine, but state veterinarian Dr. Dean Taylor said mink is not at risk of transmitting the disease to humans. Similar to the situation in the Netherlands, mink is believed to have been infected by coronavirus workers.
Dr. Taylor said all of their findings suggest that humans have been infected with mink. Although testing is still complete at this point, the human-to-mink transmission “feels like a one-way path,” he said.
Mink farms affected around the world
Veterinary pathologist Tom Baldwin evaluated animals that died in early August when the first Utah mink tested positive for the coronavirus. During the autopsy, he stated that the type of pneumonia that mink developed was not typical of that species. The lungs were “wet, heavy, red, and angry,” he reported.
Between April and July, the closure of the 18th mink farm in the Netherlands reportedly killed nearly 600,000 minks. Thousands of mink were treated with carbon monoxide gas to prevent the spread of the virus. Cases of infection on mink farms have also been reported in Spain and Denmark.
