Stephen Donnelly warned yesterday that the coming months will be the most difficult of the living memories of the healthcare system.
The Minister of Health issued a harsh statement at the annual meeting of the Irish Hospital Consultants Association held online.
His comment came when the National Public Health Emergency Team confirmed 1,012 new cases of Covid-19 and three more deaths.
While the death toll has increased to 1,824, the total number of cases here is 41,714.
The number of new cases of coronavirus recorded in Northern Ireland on Saturday was 902, bringing the total island-wide total of new cases recorded in 24 hours to 1,914.
Minister Donnelly said it is important to stabilize the system as it may be “the most challenging of living memories” for our medical sector in the coming months.
He said HSE’s winter plan, which will fund 600 million euros, is “about 15 times larger” than last year. However, there are only 15 additional ICU beds, and the capacity increases from 285 to 300 in the intensive care unit. Consultant Dr. Gabriel Correlan said a € 600 million injection was welcomed, but much less.
The director of the Department of Radiology at the National Maternity Hospital warned:
“Thanks to the fact that we need it, it’s almost a failure approval that our current resources and strategies aren’t right and not working.”
And she warned of the long-term knock-on effect of the pandemic on the rest of the health care system as cancer patients and others refused to seek treatment.
She states: “See the effects of Covid-19 on cancer. Due to the effects of the blockade, presentations and referrals to the GP were delayed.
“It will have a knockdown effect on cancer outcomes. This year we don’t know what it will be until time evolves, as compared to the previous year.
“600 million euros is a lot of money, but is it enough to be confident that we have staff and capacity and that everyone needs to access and take care of this winter?
“Most of us working in this area are already worried.”
She cited increasing numbers of trolleys, cancellation of scheduled care, and staff who tested positive for Covid-19 as her greatest concerns.
The Irish hospital is currently treating 194 patients with confirmed Covid-19, while 31 confirmed cases are currently in the intensive care unit.
