Authorities urged residents to pay attention to this Thanksgiving, despite three new COVID-19 cases occurring on Saturday
London, Ontario. -Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) reports only three new cases of the virus on Saturday, after a surge of new COVID-19 cases on Friday.
This is a significant reduction from 19 new cases in the region reported on Friday.
Saturday’s new case brings a total of 954 cases confirmed in Middlesex-London. There are 831 recovered cases and 57 deaths.
“Please stay at this Thanksgiving house and don’t leave the town,” says London Mayor Ed Holder.
This is the message that the Heath authorities have emphasized.
“It’s the movement of people that actually spreads the virus,” says Dr. Chris McKee, Head of Health at the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU).
MLHU is careful about this long holiday weekend and urges people not to travel to hotspots such as Toronto, Ottawa and Quebec.
MLHU, along with Western University staff, urges students not to return home. However, when I walked around the campus on Saturday morning, I found that the students had not received any advice.
Sophia Anadranistakis, a freshman in Winnipeg, said, “If you look around, it’s hard to stay here because it’s an empty ghost town and everyone goes home on weekends.”
“I want to go home, but I couldn’t put my family in that position.”
Her friend Natasha Hofer says she will use technology to go home and talk to her family.
“We’re on the phone or Facetime,” says Hofer.
MLHU advises residents to limit meetings to households only.
At Springbank Park, some Londoners were in a small circle, while others were having a picnic.
“I take everything that’s happening seriously,” says Cindy Rice, who was physically separated from her friends in a circle.
“We were planning to hold Thanksgiving. This time we will hold a separate Thanksgiving and zoom in on cocktails and desserts.”
My friend Kathy Wow will miss her family, but she sees it.
“We will have food on the table, and there are people who don’t,” War says.
“We have a lot to thank, which is why we call it Thanksgiving.”
