Montreal health authorities report 19 cases of COVID, 2 deaths and 12 cases in nursing homes
Homes for the elderly and nursing homes in Quebec have emerged as an important zone in the fight against COVID-19, with more than 400 facilities reporting cases, health officials said Tuesday.
In Montreal, authorities confirmed two deaths from COVID-19 and 12 confirmed cases at a long-term care facility in La Salle. Just north of Laval, health authorities reported 24 cases between the two dwellings.
This situation has been attempted in a family living in a long-term care facility known as CHSLD in Quebec.
Peter Wieland, whose Montreal writer and father has recently moved to a facility in LaSalle, has not met him since his transfer two weeks ago.
Wheeland said the transfer took place when the building was closed and technicians were unable to install a phone in his room. He is trying to get his father a cell phone so he can talk to him.
He said that communication with his family was poor.
“It’s ridiculous to find 10-20 cases of COVID-19 in CHSLD (in the media) … it’s crazy,” he said.
About 200 people live in CHSLD de LaSalle where the dead occurred. Health officials have stated that all affected residents have been moved to the ground floor to prevent further spread of the virus.
Staff who have been in close contact with the infected population have been isolated and are waiting for test results.
Health Minister Daniel McCann says that healthcare facilities are following the practice of isolating patients on the floor and creating so-called “hot zones” for those who are undergoing testing or symptoms and “cold zones” for others He said.
“It’s the best way to protect. Separating these two groups of people,” she said.
News has been reported that more deaths will occur on Tuesday as Orassio Arruda, director of the Quebec Public Health Service, reports cases of COVID-19 at 410 elderly facilities in the state.
These include 184 nursing homes, such as in LaSalle, 114 elderly homes, and 112 other facilities where the elderly live.
Nearly all of the 31 deaths in the state are over 70 and have underlying medical conditions.

The first person to die of the disease in the state lived in an elderly residence in Lavartri, northeast of Montreal, contacted a traveler, had symptoms, and was COVID-19-positive.
The facility, Residence Eva, had 39 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Tuesday, and six of the state’s 31 deaths were confirmed by local health authorities. This represents two additional deaths from the previous report.
