Douglas County reports first COVID-19 death

Douglas County Public Health reported the first COVID-19 death on Monday afternoon.

According to a news release, Douglas County residents were in their 90s and lived in Assisted Living Residences in Superior.

“Our mind is directed at the sad families and community members affected by COVID-19,” said Kathy Ronchi, a Douglas County Health Officer. “I would like to extend my deepest condolences to all who have been affected by this loss.”

As of Monday, 624 Douglas County residents tested positive for COVID-19 with a positive rate of 6%. According to county health officials, less than 10% of people in Douglas County who test positive for COVID-19 are over 70 years old, but the number continues to grow.

According to a news release, local care and living support facilities have worked with the Douglas County Public Health Service and the Wisconsin State Health Service to develop rules and regulations focused on the protection of the most vulnerable populations.

Douglas County Public Health encourages people to be aware of those who may be exposed to the virus when choosing high-risk activities such as attending large rallies.

“It may recover, but it may endanger others,” Ronki said. “If everyone does their part, fewer people will test positive and our vulnerable people will be safer.”
