Coronavirus: WHO heads call herd immunity approach “immoral”

The head of the World Health Organization has ruled out a herd immunity response to a pandemic.

Herd immunity occurs when the majority of the community has acquired immunity to the disease through vaccination or mass spread of the disease.

Some argue that the coronavirus should be allowed to spread naturally without the vaccine.

However, WHO Chief Tedros Ghebreyesus said such an approach was “scientifically and ethically problematic.”

Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been more than 37 million confirmed cases of coronavirus worldwide. It is known that more than one million people have died.

Hundreds of vaccines are currently under development, many of which are highly tested, but none have received international approval yet.

At a press conference on Monday, Dr. Gebreez argued that the long-term effects of the coronavirus, as well as the strength and duration of the immune response, remain unknown.

“Herd immunity is achieved by protecting people from the virus, not by exposing them to the virus,” he said.

“In the history of public health, herd immunity has never been used as a strategy to respond to outbreaks, not to mention pandemics.”

WHO officials added that serum prevalence tests (blood antibody tests) suggest that only 10% of countries are exposed to the coronavirus.

“Therefore, circulating Covid-19 unchecked means allowing unnecessary infections, pain, and death,” he said.
