Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day: Finding Treatments and Funding Treatments
Today is the day when awareness is raised and research is being funded to find better treatments and treatments for stage 4 veterinary cancer.
Grand Rapids, Michigan — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which has been around for years. However, much more recent efforts have led to the awareness of the most deadly forms of breast cancer.
October 13th is Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) Awareness Day. MBC is a stage 4 breast cancer that has spread to the outside of the breast, usually the lungs, liver, bones, and brain. Why does this particular cancer need a day like today? One in eight women develops breast cancer, and 30% of them develop MBC.
Darlen Wilson lives with the MBC in the Detroit area and says most of the money raised in October is actually being used to study the disease.
“Only 2-5% of all breast cancer funds raised at’Pink Tober’and similar events are aimed at finding a cure,” Wilson explained. “Or there are even additional treatments to make this a chronic illness rather than the deadly illness of today.”
Currently, the limited treatments available to deal with MBC have debilitating side effects, some of which deprive the patient of walking ability and others of which cause blisters and headaches in the mouth.
For Wilson, the medicines she takes cause heart damage. She needs to have echocardiography on a regular basis, and the day may come when doctors need to change treatments.
“If more money is allocated to MBC, we hope that research can find additional treatments that make it a more livable disease,” Wilson said.
Every day 115 people die from MBC, and in honor of the statistics, more than 115 landmarks in cities in all 50 states are illuminated with MBC colors (teal, green, pink) to raise awareness about the disease. Will be done. This includes the Grand Rapids Blue Bridge and McKay Tower.
