Dr. Khalilah Gates, a lung specialist in Chicago, said that many hospitalized COVID-19 patients have coughing episodes, dyspnea, and malaise 3-4 months after infection.
She said it was difficult to accurately predict when COVID-19 patients would feel better.
“All of these uncertainties are that we don’t have all the answers,” said Gates, an assistant professor at Northwestern University’s Fineberg School of Medicine.
It is also difficult to predict which patients will develop complications after the initial illness has subsided.
COVID-19 can affect almost any organ, and long-term complications include heart inflammation, decreased renal function, vague thinking, anxiety, and depression.
Dr. Jay Barkey, an infectious disease specialist at Emory University, said it was unclear whether the virus itself or the inflammation it could cause would lead to these protracted problems.
“Overcoming an acute illness doesn’t necessarily end it,” he said.
