19 COVIDs in St. Louis County Prison

Clayton, Missouri — There are no new cases of COVID-19 at the Buzz Westfall Justice Center after a series of cases were discovered earlier this month, but hundreds of test results are still pending.

According to a St. Louis County Health Department press release, the county tested 289 prisoners on October 9, all of which returned negative. The county has not yet received the results of an additional 560 tests performed on October 12.

So far, 20 prisoners and 1 employee have tested positive for the virus. Three of them are experiencing mild symptoms and the rest are asymptomatic, Release said.

The outbreak was first identified on October 2, when prisoners tested positive during regular screening. Patients who previously tested negative for the disease were transferred to the facility’s COVID unit. The health department has begun testing prisoners and employees who have come into contact with patients.

Health officials said they did not know the source, but are conducting contact tracing and case studies.

“We are working very hard to minimize the potential for COVID-19 infection in our facility,” said Springschmidt, co-director of the St. Louis County Public Health Service. .. “Unfortunately, the virus exists in our community and we cannot control every point where employees and patients come into contact with the outside world.”
