COVID-19 spreads to Tulsa County Prison. 84 active cases, sheriff office says
The Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office is responding to the COVID-19 outbreak in the county prison, a spokesman said Tuesday.
TCSO Communications Director Casey Roebuck said at a news conference that 84 of the total population of 1,158 inhabited as of Tuesday were actively infected with the new coronavirus. An additional 21 people were considered recovered and 6 staff members were infected. Roebuck said he was not hospitalized, but the prisoners were being treated in-house.
“The ultimate goal is not only to ensure that these prisoners are okay, but also to prevent them from spreading throughout the community. We use ventilators in local hospitals. I definitely don’t want that, “Roebuck said.
According to Roebuck, all new prisoners will be tested at the time of booking and will be housed in quarantined units until a negative test. She also said the prison measured staff temperature, disinfected the facility, and provided masks and hand sanitizers to all prisoners and employees.
“You don’t have to panic here,” Roebuck said. “At some point I knew that the population of prisoners would reflect what I saw in the community. We had a lot of time to prepare this to make sure we were on top of it. We’ve spent resources. We have the necessary PPE (personal protective equipment) and sanitary equipment to keep track of the situation. “
Prison administrator Major Eric Kitch said the prison had ample space to isolate infected and exposed prisoners for the foreseeable future.
“As long as the numbers stay where they are, I have a place to isolate people at this point,” Kitch said.
Asked after a press conference what the prison plan would be if the outbreak worsened, Roebuck said he couldn’t answer that question at this time.
