False Information on Covid-19: Vaccines alone “may not be enough to end a pandemic”

Scientists say it may not be enough to develop a Covid-19 vaccine that works to end a pandemic unless governments and technology companies take steps to address the false information about the coronavirus. “Warning.

In a study of five countries, including the United Kingdom, scientists found a “clear link” between the Covid-19 conspiracy theory and hesitation about future coronavirus vaccines.

A study published in the journal Royal Society Open Science found that older people and those who are good at numbers are better at finding fake coronavirus news.

Dr. Sander van der Linden, director of the Cambridge Social Decision-Making Lab and one of the authors of this study, said: “Certain false information claims are consistently considered credible by a significant portion of the population.

“There is a clear link between believing in the coronavirus conspiracy and hesitating future vaccines.

“Government and tech companies need to find ways to improve the digital media literacy of their population, as well as flag false claims.

“Otherwise, developing an effective vaccine may not be enough.”

Scientists at the University of Cambridge examined data from 5,000 people in five countries: the United Kingdom, the United States, Ireland, Mexico, and Spain.

Participants were asked to assess the credibility of several statements, including six common myths about Covid-19.

The majority of the people surveyed determined that the false information was unreliable, but researchers said they found that certain conspiracy theories were settled in “a significant portion of the population.”

The claim that Covid-19 was designed at a laboratory in Wuhan, China was considered “trustworthy” by 22-23% of UK and US respondents.

This rose to 26% in Ireland, 36% in Mexico and 37% in Spain, researchers said.

Meanwhile, 13% of the people surveyed in the UK considered the pandemic to be part of a global vaccination program, 22% in Mexico and 18% in Ireland, Spain and the United States.

5G plots claiming that some communications towers are exacerbating Covid-19’s symptoms are more than 16% of participants in both Mexico and Spain, 12% in Ireland, and 8% in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Turned out to dominate.

The researchers also asked participants about their attitude towards future coronavirus vaccines.

They found that those who rated the Covid-19 conspiracy theory as more credible were far less likely to be vaccinated.

On the other hand, we found that high scores on computational tasks made Covid-19 less sensitive to false information.

Dr. Jon Roozenbeek, lead author and postdoc of the Faculty of Psychology in Cambridge, said: “Computational power is the most important predictor of resistance to false information we find.

“We are now dealing with a large amount of statistics and interpretation of R numbers.

“Developing numerical skills to screen online information can be very important in curbing“ infodemics ”and promoting good public health behaviour. “

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
