The National Guard needed to support the outbreak of COVID-19 at Twin Cities, two nursing homes in Minnesota.
Minnesota National Guard was called in to help two nursing homes deal with the outbreak of the coronavirus as long-term care facilities face a new wave of COVID-19 infections.
State health officials said on Tuesday that security guards were sought help at the Guardian Angels Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hibbing and the Sacred Heart Care Center in Austin. The increase in COVID-19 cases, most likely caused by community infections, caused staff shortages and guards had to intervene to assist.
“If COVID continues to spread to the community, it could continue to be understaffed in nursing homes,” said Scott Smith, a spokesman for the Ministry of Health, in a statement. “By following guidelines to reduce the spread of COVID, the community is ensuring the resilience of public health and safety.”
After that, the outbreak at the hibbing facility stabilized and no ambulance was needed. Security guards continue to assist in 17 confirmed infections in Austin. There are 7 staff and 10 residents.
“People who test positive for COVID-19 are isolated from other communities and treated by a designated staff team,” Sacred Heart posted in a website update. “Staff who test positive are quarantined at home and cannot return to work until they recover and pass the return to work protocol.”
“Any site with executives of Army and Air National Guard trained and nationally certified doctors, doctor assistants, nurses, and emergency medical technicians,” Smith said in Minnesota.
Infectious diseases in long-term care facilities such as nursing homes and long-term care facilities have increased again after being relatively stable during the summer. Nursing homes bear the brunt of the early pandemics, accounting for 1,524 of the 2,151 deaths in Minnesota to date.
In May, state officials announced a wide range of efforts to help control the outbreak of facilities. This included more testing and protection, better infection control, and staff shortage assistance.

Since midsummer, Minnesota in its twenties has been the age group with the highest number of coronavirus cases and currently accounts for over 26,000 infectious diseases. In contrast, residents over the age of 60 account for less than 20,000 infections.
