Patients reveal what it’s like to have a long Covid in a new study

People suffering from long covids say they were almost bedridden months after the coronavirus infection.

A new study published in the British Journal of General Practice (BJGP Open) focused on people with persistent, long-term symptoms after Covid-19 infection.

They were then interviewed by researchers and asked to share their experiences.

The wife of a 67-year-old man who was infected with the coronavirus in March told the research team that her husband was sleeping “20 hours a day” at some point in his recovery.

She states: “He’s still asleep. Five and a half months later, he’s asleep badly. Instead of lying down, he just sat down and he was completely exhausted.”

Another 50-year-old woman was also believed to have had the illness in March, and said she initially thought she had recovered until she became tired about 15 days later.

She said. “It was as if I had been overrun. You know what I felt, gravity felt it was extra applied to my limbs.

“And it seemed like I couldn’t do anything, so I stopped walking altogether.”

She said one day she was left “bedridden” by fatigue.

Meanwhile, a 34-year-old woman told researchers that even simple tasks such as peeling vegetables require a break.

She said. “You have to do the chores, sit for 15 or 20 minutes and then do the following: It’s annoying me. It’s like peeling a potato, then peeling a carrot straight. can not.”

Other participants talked about feeling unqualified for health care and the difficulty of finding a general practitioner who believes their symptoms are genuine.

They also raised concerns about never recovering from the illness.

“I feel like I’m lacking in knowledge, and I really couldn’t get any answer,” a 50-year-old woman told researchers.

“I know, you know this is obviously a new illness, but it didn’t happen even if one doctor did a little research on it and came back to me.”

Another 42-year-old woman, suspected of being infected with the coronavirus in March, said she was “feared” that she could die “several times.”

“Maybe I’m not going to die now,” but no doubt “I’ll never get better from this kind of emotion,” she added.

This paper, published in BJGP, features an analysis of 24 interviews.

None of the interviewees were hospitalized when the coronavirus infection was first suspected or confirmed.

Half of the participants in the study were not tested for Covid-19, and only one of the participants tested positive.

Researchers said the availability of the test was limited when participants were acutely infected.

The study, led by the University of Kiel, found that further research is needed to “better understand the trajectory of recovery,” to inform and improve patient care.
