In Colorado, COVID-19 outbreaks have been more active than ever since the pandemic began.
This week, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment set a new record by reporting 274 COVID-19 outbreaks in schools, restaurants, stores, churches, and other facilities throughout the state.
The previous highest score was set last week and there were 236 active outbreaks. Prior to that, more than 200 locations were associated with an ongoing coronavirus outbreak in early June.
The State Department of Health defines outbreaks as two or more cases associated with the same location or event within two weeks. Therefore, if two people test positive on the first day of school, it is not an outbreak unless they have recently attended another event. The outbreak is considered to have ended after 4 weeks with no new cases.
Colorado has seen an increase in active outbreaks as state officials call it the “third wave” of the virus, following its early peaks in March and June and its second surge in July. I will.
The state closed a record of 967 new cases on Monday, raising concerns about hospital capacity in the coming weeks as Colorado’s positive test rate exceeded the major 5% benchmark.
As of Wednesday, 317 COVID-19 patients were identified in Colorado hospitals. This is a 59% increase from October 1st, the highest number since late May. On Wednesday, 77% of the intensive care unit beds available in the state were used, but the state is not tracking how many of them are coronavirus patients.
On Monday, Mayor Michael Hancock warned about the rise in COVID-19 infections, saying the city’s seven-day average case rate was at the same level as in May. A spokesman for the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment said Wednesday that authorities are working on the city’s latest public health order, which is likely to be released later this week or earlier next week.
Most of Colorado’s current coronavirus outbreaks were discovered in September or October, but outbreaks in prisons and homeless shelters date back to April. As of Wednesday, half of the cases are less than five, but outbreaks that are still considered active may continue to grow.
So far in October, there have been 119 new outbreaks, an average of 11 cases, each with less than one death. When the state began tracking outbreaks in March, the average of each outbreak was more than 40 and 7 people died. This is probably because most of them were in high-risk environments such as nursing homes.
The average number of deaths per outbreak fell below one in June as the outbreak moved to an environment with fewer people at risk of serious complications, such as offices and restaurants. The average number of cases per outbreak also generally declined from spring to summer and recovered to over 18 in September, mainly due to the unusually high number of cases at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
The largest outbreaks in progress occur primarily in universities and prisons.
- CU Boulder: 1,711 cases, no death
- From the Cise-Simonet Detention Center in Denver: 676 cases, no death
- Sterling Correctional Facility: 635 cases, 3 deaths
- Colorado State University, Fort Collins: 375 cases, no death
- JBS Meat Packaging Factory, Greeley: 295 cases, 6 deaths (this outbreak was declared on 30 September but resumed after another case was found)
- University of Denver Community Outbreak: 217 cases, no death
- People experiencing the homeless, Denver: 160 cases, no death
- Stephen Roberts Original Dessert, Aurora: 144 cases, 1 death
- Colorado Springs Jabil Healthcare: 124 cases, no death
- Fremont Correctional Facility in Canon City: 121 cases, no death (this does not include 10 cases from another outbreak in August)
Outbreaks in college include previously reported cases related to friendship, dormitories, and teams. All totals include confirmed and possible cases reported by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Database of occurrence Every Wednesday.
