Coronavirus: Eight people died in a retirement home in eastern Toronto, 69 cases confirmed suspected COVID-19

Six of the eight residents of Seven Oaks Nursing Home who died were over 85 years old, according to a renewal provided by Toronto Public Health (TPH) authorities on Wednesday. The other two were between the ages of 60 and 85.

Dr. Elizabeth Lair, Toronto associate medical officer, said three residents had died Tuesday night and early Wednesday. At least two deaths have been announced previously.

In the renewal, the renewal said that six residents and nine staff are currently working with COVID-19, and there are 54 resident cases deemed “probable”.

Seven Oaks Nursing Home, located near Morningside Avenue and Ellesmere Road, is operated by the City of Toronto. According to the city, the facility has 249 residents.

Mayor Johntory issued a condolence statement on Wednesday night, stating that the city would enforce a 14-day self-isolation order.

“It’s painful to know that eight people died due to the outbreak of the virus at the nursing homes and other people after the outbreak of COVID-19 at Cebu Oaks,” he said.

“We ordered those infected with the virus to be quarantined for 14 days and moved to further protect those most vulnerable to the virus, including residents of nursing homes.”

Locally, the TPH said there were outbreaks in 18 nursing homes and two nursing homes. The outbreak definition has recently been changed to one confirmed case of COVID-19.

Deaths were also confirmed at Rekai Center Long-term Care Home at Sherborne Place and Extendicare Bayview (southwest).

The news of death has been accompanied by an increase in the number of cases at nursing homes in various parts of Ontario. 14 residents have died at Bob Cayjon’s Pineless Tothing Home.

As of Wednesday morning, the Ontario government stated that there were 2,392 cases of COVID-19 in the state. In total, 37 Ontario residents have died and 689 cases are considered resolved.
