Update-Skagway sees 5 positive COVID-19 cases

The Dar Memorial Clinic (DMC) reports that two more cases have been identified on the Skagway, for a total of five positive cases. All of this is believed to be widespread in the community.

DMC continues to test residents who come into contact with people who test positive. The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will provide the latest test information on Sunday, October 18th.

DMC and EOC continue to encourage individuals to monitor their health and build close relationships. In a press release from the municipality, the Dar Memorial Clinic reports that it has been granted permission to publish his name from the third positive coronavirus case.

Mike O’Daniel shares his identity in efforts to help track contracts with DMC and the community. DMC and MOS urge residents to begin keeping contact logs in case the COVID-19 test is positive.

In addition, close contacts should do the following:

  2. Pay attention to your symptoms and check your temperature twice daily for 14 days after your last contact. Symptoms that can develop within 14 days of exposure include fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or dyspnea, chest compressions or tension, fatigue, muscle or body pain, headache, loss of taste or odor, throat. There is pain and so on. Congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea.
  3. If you experience any of these symptoms, stay home, except to have your test done as soon as possible. Two days before getting sick and 10 days after getting sick can infect others. Do not go to work or public places. You can easily spread COVID-19 before you feel any symptoms.

DMC and MOS are urging residents to start logging their contacts in case the COVID-19 test is positive.

The city of Skagway reported this morning that a third case of COVID-19 was confirmed by the Dahl Memorial Clinic (DMC). The clinic is currently testing multiple community members identified as having close contact with known COVID-19-infected individuals. The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will provide updates today at 1 pm and 5 pm. Family members will be notified before the EOC releases the report.

In a Facebook post this morning, Skagway Hardware reported that employees tested positive and were temporarily shut down due to community safety.

“Our employees take the test and resume after receiving some negative results.”

A second case of COVID-19 was reported by the Dar Memorial Clinic after a presumptive positive test. The case has been reported to the Department of Epidemiology, and the clinic is in contact tracking with the State Public Health Service. This case, like the first case, is believed to have spread to the community.

Yesterday, Skagway was one of three US counties or autonomous regions that had no cases of COVID. That was yesterday.

This afternoon, the municipality of the Skagway Emergency Operations Center (EOC) reported that the Dar Memorial Clinic identified the first positive case of COVID-19 in Skagway. According to the EOC, this case is likely to be widespread in the community, so we started the protocol for the scenario.

Residents of Skagway must evacuate there for at least 7 days. This is an EOC publication that states, “There is no group gathering, limiting all contact outside the direct family unit, working in important jobs, receiving medical care, and / or to others. Residents also need to maintain social distance, wear cloth face coverings, and wash their hands frequently.

DAHL Clinic is closed for 48 hours

The Dar Memorial Clinic was closed for 48 hours for staff testing, contact with the Public Health Department, and disinfection of the clinic.

According to Dar’s statement, public health considers close contact to be those who have spent more than 15 minutes within 6 feet of a COVID-positive person, with or without a mask.

At around 12:45 pm on Thursday, parents began receiving calls from Skagway School to pick up their children.

A Facebook post from a Skagway company mentioned new times and new instructions from the COVID-19 incident.

Those who are confirmed to have been in close contact with the infected person by contract tracking will be notified. According to the State Public Health Service, endangered individuals are required to undergo two test protocols or to be self-quarantined for 14 days.

The typical incubation period for COVID-19 (from infection to onset of symptoms) is 2 to 14 days.

An EOC statement issued this afternoon states that their goal is to minimize risk and control the spread of COVID-19.

Other US counties that do not yet have COVID-19 are Esmeralda County, Nevada, and Loving County, Texas.
