5 things you can do to prevent this disease
Osteoporosis, literally translated from Latin into “porous bone,” is a debilitating bone disease. Bone has two parts: a hard outer shell called cortical or compact bone, and a relatively soft inner shell called trabecular bone. The trabecular bone is naturally like a honeycomb and has a small empty space. In the case of osteoporosis, these gaps grow, making the bones weaker and more brittle.
World Osteoporosis Day takes place on October 20th each year to raise awareness about the disease. The disease is usually associated with old age, but it can be prevented by taking precautions when young.
Symptoms of osteoporosis
Osteoporosis affects all genders, but studies show that postmenopausal women are at increased risk of developing osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is usually asymptomatic in the early stages. In fact, most people aren’t even diagnosed with the disease until they have a fracture and have an x-ray. This will tell you if there is a problem with bone density.
Having a family history of osteoporosis increases your risk of developing osteoporosis, so you should screen yourself, whether you have symptoms or not. If symptoms occur, the gums may recede, grip strength may weaken, and the nails may weaken or break. If you have severe osteoporosis, a fracture with slight trauma (such as sneezing) can be an important symptom. Persistent back and neck pain and age-related stature reduction can also be symptoms of severe osteoporosis.
Risk factors for osteoporosis
Below are some of the common risk factors for osteoporosis.
- Have a family history of osteoporosis or fracture
- Increasing age
- Female gender, menopause
- Low or no dietary calcium, vitamin D, protein, or other minerals
- Little or no physical activity
- Smoking that reduces bone density faster
- Alcohol abuse to prevent new bone formation and increase the risk of falls
- Thyroid disorders such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism
- Use of corticosteroids or other drugs
Prevention of osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a preventable disease, especially when appropriate measures are taken from an early age. This means adopting the following precautions from childhood to old age: Prevention of osteoporosis is a lifelong goal.
1. Get minerals: Your bone density and health depend on calcium, iron, phosphorus, and minerals like vitamin D and protein. Eat plenty of milk, cheese, paneer, yogurt, chicken, fish, vegetables, nuts and seeds to make sure you have enough to eat. If you are at risk for osteoporosis, talk to your doctor about calcium and vitamin D supplements as well.
2. Workout: Your bone health is intricately associated with muscle health-thus the use of musculoskeletal health. Regular moderate to strenuous exercise, especially weight training, is known to improve musculoskeletal strength and prevent osteoporosis.
3. Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol. If there are two lifestyle habits that increase the risk of osteoporosis, they are smoking and heavy drinking. If you quit smoking, your bones will appreciate it. Women should not drink more than one cup a day and men should be limited to two cups a day.
4. Maintain a healthy weight. Excessive weight gain and obesity adversely affect bone health and can lead to premature bone deterioration. This can, in turn, lead to osteoporosis. If you are overweight or obese, start exercising and maintain a healthy diet to stay fit.
5. Get screened: If you have a sufficient family history of risk factors, especially osteoporosis, and you are a woman, you should be screened for osteoporosis early. Talk to your doctor if you can do dual X-ray absorption spectroscopy (DXA).

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence.
