Pennsylvania Confirms First COVID-19 Positive Cat
This case was reported by Dr. Kevin Brightville, a state veterinarian. He said a 16-year-old cat lived in a family with multiple people infected with COVID-19 and was humanely euthanized earlier this month after showing dyspnea.
According to state officials, Cumberland County cats are one of only a handful of pets nationwide known to have died or been euthanized after COVID-19 infection. All had long-term contact with infected humans, along with underlying health problems. No one died from COVID-19 alone.
Experts recommend paying attention to pets as well as other humans. State officials have recommended the following guidelines for pet owners who test positive for COVID-19:
- As with any other person, avoid contact with pets and other animals.
- Arrange for another household member to take care of your pet while you or your family are isolated.
- Avoid contact, such as touching, hugging, snuggling, face contact, or sleeping in the same bed.
- If you cannot find an alternative care for your pet, wear a mask and wash your hands before feeding or caring for your pet.
Symptoms of COVID-19 in pets include fever, cough, dyspnea or shortness of breath, drowsiness, sneezing, nasal or eye secretions, vomiting or diarrhea.
Pet owners whose animals exhibit these symptoms after contact with an infected human should contact a veterinarian. Currently, there is no evidence that animals play an important role in spreading COVID-19 to humans.
