St. Mike in Toronto Addresses COVID-19 Outbreak in Emergency Department
Toronto-Toronto’s St. Michael’s Hospital states that it is dealing with an outbreak of COVID-19 in the emergency department, but the hospital remains open to those in need of care.
“As of this morning (October 20), there are five active COVID-19-positive staff members associated with this outbreak. So far, no patient cases have been identified,” said Downtown. The trauma center said in a statement on its website Tuesday night.
Outbreaks are defined as two COVID-19 cases within 14 days, and both cases may have been reasonably acquired in the hospital.
To That statementThe hospital said it had determined that the risk of exposure to patients was low.
“Our emergency department remains open, safe for patients in need of emergency care, and the risk of infection for patients is low,” the hospital said.
According to the statement, the hospital will contact all patients who have direct contact with any of the affected staff and advise on the next steps.
“Patients who have visited the emergency department in the last two weeks are advised to self-monitor their symptoms and be tested if something happens,” the statement said.
The hospital said additional safety measures currently in place include additional testing of staff, enhanced lavage and infection control procedures, and additional safety precautions for staff and patients.
The hospital said it strongly encourages people in need of emergency care to visit St. Mike’s emergency department as usual.
Many other Toronto hospitals, including Toronto Western and St. Joseph, are also addressing the outbreak of COVID-19 as Ontario fights the second wave of the virus.
The state reported 821 new infections on Tuesday.
