A recent study conducted by a research team led by Florian Kiefer of MedUniVienna’s Endocrine Metabolism Division has shown that low ambient temperatures increase vitamin A levels in humans and mice. This helps convert “bad” white adipose tissue into “good” brown adipose tissue and stimulates fat burning and fever. In humans and mammals, at least two types of fat accumulation can be identified in white and brown adipose tissue. During the onset of obesity, excess calories are stored primarily in white fat. In contrast, brown fat burns energy, which produces heat. Over 90% of human body fat accumulation is white and is usually found in the abdomen, lower legs and upper legs. Converting white to brown fat may be a new treatment option to combat weight gain and obesity.

A research group led by Florian Kiefer, Department of Endocrine Metabolism, Department of Medicine III, MedUniVienna, has shown that moderate cold application increases levels of human and mouse vitamin A and its blood transporter, retinol-binding protein. Most of the vitamin A reserves are stored in the liver, and cold exposure appears to stimulate the redistribution of vitamin A to adipose tissue. The increase in vitamin A caused by the cold resulted in the conversion of white fat to brown fat (“brown fat”), resulting in a higher rate of fat burning.

When Keefer and his team genetically engineered to block the mouse vitamin A transporter “retinol-binding protein,” both cold-mediated elevation of vitamin A and “browning” of white fat slowed: “As a result.
