Kalamazoo County offers a drive-through clinic for influenza vaccination

Kalamazoo County offers a drive-through clinic for influenza vaccination

Kalamazoo, Michigan-To immunize 51% of Kalamazoo County residents by the end of the flu season, the County Health Department has set up a drive-through clinic that offers free flu shots.

The Drive-Through Clinic will be held on Saturday, October 24th, from 10 am to 2 pm in the Stones Church parking lot at 1225 W. Paterson St.

Everyone who is vaccinated against the flu for more than 6 months must bring a photo ID and insurance card. Influenza vaccines are covered by most health insurance plans. The health sector provides free vaccines to uninsured or uninsured people.

This year, the Ministry of Health wanted to increase the proportion of people vaccinated against the flu by 33% compared to last year’s flu season. The county website is currently on Influenza vaccination tracker showing weekly progress.

As of Wednesday, October 21, the current percentage of vaccinated residents is 19.49%. Percentage from the same period last year. This is still below the department’s goals. That is, 26.79% of the county’s population had been vaccinated against the flu by this week.

According to county epidemiologist Mary Frank, vaccination has declined in recent years in the 18-24 and 50-64 age groups.

The health department advises everyone over 6 months to get the flu vaccine each year, especially in the specific groups that are considered to be at the highest risk. They include infants, pregnant women, adults in chronic health, and adults over the age of 50.

Influenza vaccination takes about two weeks to provide complete protection against the flu virus. The Department of Health recommends that residents be vaccinated before the holiday season begins.

The County Health Department has partnered with Ascension Børge, Bronson Healthcare, Family Health Centers, and WMed Health to spread ways to stop the virus. The flu season usually begins in October and can last until May.

Encouraging more residents to be vaccinated against influenza is also part of the county’s COVID-19 intervention. Medical professionals are afraid of burdening hospitals and medical resources if the two viruses surge at the same time.

Coronavirus cases are increasing in Kalamazoo County. The 7-day average of new cases this month peaked on October 8 with 63 new cases per day. This is a significant increase compared to the highest 7-day average of 24 new cases per day in April.

Recently, the number of cases has declined since the surge on October 8, but it is still about twice the peak in April, with an average of 44 new cases per day.

Dr. Martinson Arnan, Chief Clinical Officer of the Bronson Medical Group, reiterated what medical professionals said from the beginning of the pandemic — coronavirus is not the same as influenza. According to Arnan, only overlapping symptoms such as fever and body aches are important similarities.

He said the high infection and mortality rates set the coronavirus apart from other strains of the virus.

“I think the virus has proven to be resilient,” Arnan said. “It behaves very differently from what we know. [influenza] Being a virus, the similarity between the two viruses is really small. I think the difference makes them stand out. One of them was deadly and devastated the world. “

In addition to the drive-through clinic, influenza vaccines are also provided by appointment in the health department by calling or visiting 269-373-5203. www.kalcounty.com/hcs/fluvaccine..
