Nearly 50 people became ill after a fellowship event in a small church in Maine
A total of 49 cases are associated with outbreaks at the Brooks Pentecostal Church in Waldo County, Dr. Nirab Shah, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Maine, said at a press conference Thursday.
“We expect that number to increase in the next few days,” Shah said.
Seven of the cases are related to the Lighthouse Christian Academy, a church-affiliated school in the town of Brooks.
According to Shah, there is one case associated with this outbreak at Bayview Manor, a residential care facility in nearby Searsport. The individual is a staff member, and investigators are trying to determine if there was a virus infection at the facility.
Chad Croutier, CEO of facility operator DLTC Healthcare, denied that the incident was related to the outbreak, and shortly after learning that employees were positive, the facility was open to all residents on Sunday. Said he tested the staff. All results have returned to negative, according to Croutier.
As part of the outbreak, three elementary schools are under investigation. According to Shah, the state is not yet aware of cases of infections associated with these schools.
Shah emphasized that there are individuals who are “involved” in schools and facilities that are positive as part of the outbreak, rather than occurring within them.
Authorities are monitoring other church and Bible school members who may have been infected with the virus from people who attended a fellowship event earlier in the month.
According to Shah, about 100 to 150 people participated in the event.
He begged the residents to test whether they participated in or contacted those who participated in the service at the Brooks Pentecostal Church.
The State Department of Health will work with church and school staff to identify more cases and expand testing within the county, Shah said. Waldo County has approximately 40,000 inhabitants, of whom 1,100 live in Brooks.
The church has not responded to CNN’s request for comment.
