CDC warns of outbreaks of Listeria monocytogenes associated with Delimite
The Listeria outbreak has affected 10 people in three states, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention believes it is due to Delimite.
The CDC warned of an outbreak on Friday, sending 10 people from Florida, Massachusetts, and New York to hospitals and killing one in Florida.
Authorities said the deli meat was likely the cause of the outbreak. Nine victims reported eating Italian-style meat such as salami, but the CDC has not yet identified common meat or suppliers as sources.
The median age of infected individuals was 81 years, most of whom were women. Many people are less likely to get serious illness from Listeria monocytogenes, people over the age of 65, but people with weakened immunity and pregnant women are at increased risk of getting sick.
Listeria monocytogenes is especially dangerous for pregnant women. Infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, preterm birth, or life-threatening infections in newborns.
Symptoms of infections usually begin 1 to 4 weeks after eating contaminated food and include fever, muscle aches, headaches, confusion, and imbalance.
Previous outbreaks of Listeria monocytogenes are associated with hard-boiled eggs, mushrooms, and soft cheese.
The CDC advises people at high risk of infection not to eat deli meat unless it is completely heated first. The agency also recommends keeping the meat away from other foods in the refrigerator to keep the surrounding surface clean.
Investigation into the outbreak is ongoing.
